Beginning Sketching

Adult / Adult Enrichment -
Winter/Spring 2027

Have you ever wanted to sketch without pressure? Just having fun recording what you see? Maybe you want to go out to do some urban sketching or possibly improve your drawing skills for painting. In this introduction to sketching, we will focus one night on sketching with graphite pencils, the second night with water soluble graphite pencils, and choosing the right paper for you. Designed for the complete beginner.

Paula Pettis

Paula Pettis began watercolor painting in 2019. She has traveled to England, Italy, Scotland, and Greece to paint plein air. Her watercolors have been shown in the gallery at Unity Church-Unitarian in St. Paul, MN, at Blick Art Materials in Roseville, MN, and she has had both watercolors, and a graphite pencil drawing, on display at the Bakken Museum. In 2024, her painting “Summer - White Bear Lake” was chosen to be displayed in the juried show “Into Nature Plein Air Exhibition” at White Bear Center for the Arts, and in October & November, it was shown in the Minnesota Watercolor Society’s Fall Exhibition “Light in Droplets.” In 2026, her painting “The Way Life Should Be” was chosen to be displayed in the juried show “52nd Annual Northern Lights Juried Art Exhibition” at White Bear Center for the Arts.
